About the Artist- Sandra Gustafson
My work is rooted in intuition, emotion, and the physical act of painting. I am drawn to movement—how color shifts, how layers interact, how texture carries feeling. Each piece begins without a fixed destination. Instead, I follow the energy of the moment, allowing the work to unfold through gesture, rhythm, and the unexpected interactions of materials.
I work in mixed media because it mirrors the complexity of experience. Ink, water, gouache, and layered textures create a visual language that feels alive—fluid, atmospheric, and deeply human. My process is a conversation between control and surrender, structure and spontaneity. I build surfaces slowly, then disrupt them, letting accidents become part of the story.
Nature influences my work through sensation rather than representation: the way light moves across water, the quiet of a horizon, the pulse of wind or weather. These impressions become abstract forms that invite viewers to feel rather than interpret.
Teaching private workshops is an extension of my studio practice. I encourage students to trust their instincts, explore freely, and discover their own visual voice. My goal is to create space for curiosity, vulnerability, and creative play.
Ultimately, my work is about presence—being fully in the moment, responding to what emerges, and allowing the painting to become what it wants to be.
